Hermès first arrived in Indonesia in 2002, opening a duty free store on the idyllic holiday island of Bali. And now, more that two decades on, in collaboration with local luxury retail partner Masari Group, the Paris-based fashion house is firmly established, also in Jakarta, the country’s capital and leading hub of luxury shopping. And it’s here, where yesterday, Hermès has unveiled its expanded and redesigned boutique at Plaza Indonesia, arguably the city’s leading luxury shopping centre. Situated on the lobby floor of Grand Hyatt Indonesia, the five-star hotel which is pretty much an integral part of Plaza Indonesia shopping centre, the Hermès boutique sees an interior design by French architecture practice and longtime collaborator RDAI. But let’s start with the store façade, which is now clad in teal-green ceramic tiles, but artfully applied, creating a three-dimensional wave-like pattern.

Interestingly, the store interior integrates local craftsmanship through hand-woven gradient wall fabrics and furniture rendered in light cloth and wood. Stucco and dappled walls combine raw grains with muted teal tones and colourful accents. Upon entering the Hermès store, shoppers are greeted by the house’s Faubourg mosaic in a gradient of blue, copper and green embedded in the floor of fashion jewellery, along with women’s and men’s silks, and surrounded by the home collection and perfume area. Guided by bespoke geometric wood flooring, the equestrian and leather goods collections are framed by fabric-covered panels evoking the caress of a butterfly’s wings. In colourful settings, the shoe universe sits within serene enclaves showcasing a selection of the women’s and men’s apparel collections.

Hand-carved green and gold lacquered wall panels unveil the jewellery and watches salon, while hand-tufted carpets create harmony in the store design. The aforementioned artistic element in the store is further boosted by a curated range of artworks from the Émile Hermès Collection on display, including colourful creatures by Polish artist Jan Bajtlik which mimic Indonesian wildlife and a 19th-century illustration of a man formed of winged insects, entitled The Entomologist, which is an interpration of garden fauna. In celebration of the store reopening, Indonesian art collective Tromarama has been commissioned to create window installations. Inspired by travel, the scenes transform train interiors into lively dreamscapes, incorporating not only objects and animated films to map a dynamic journey, but also uniting Hermès‘ equestrian heritage with Jakarta‘s bustling rail network. © superfuture
