While India‘s economy is booming, it’s in the country’s leading cities where a more elevated lifestyle has emerged first through a sophisticated diversification of retail, hospitality and services. With over 15 million dwellers in its sprawling metropolitan area, Bengaluru is an economic force to be reckoned with, and here too, café society has taken root in multiple forms. One of the latest striking coffee parlours to open its doors is the design-led Kinya. Situated in Dollars Colony, an aptly named affluent enclave just north of the city centre, the café is set up as a retreat of sorts from the urban hustle and bustle. As such, local architecture and design practice Studio Bomb created an understated and simple – dare we say ‘rural’? – material palette was applied which effortlessly signals tranquility and relaxation.

Kinya actually means ‘small’ in Tulu, the native coastal language of the owner, and the 200 sq.ft. (approx. 19 sqm.) space totally lives up to its name. Floor-to-ceiling glass allows an abundance of natural light in, and in the seating area, the window can be fully retracted. Upon entering the café, visitors encounter a metal clad counter and service station with tiered shelving as a backdrop. The adjacent seating sees a wall-mounted steel bench paired with matching circular tables and chairs. Right outside, additional seating can be found below a lush shade-throwing tree. A thatched wall section adds a distinct rustic element to the palette of earthy hues. The metal, however, blends in an urban element. The menu at Kinya lists various coffee concoctions, tea and matcha, in addition to fresh pastries. © superfuture
