The popularity of golf among some big names in the music industry stateside is an ongoing phenomenon, contributing not only to a style revolution on the greens and far beyond, but also inspiring a new generation to engage in the ball game. Founded only in 2017 by husband-and-team Stephen and Erica Malbon, also two avid golf players, the Malbon brand has infused the game with effortless urban cool which resonated well with a young demographic across the planet. And yes, quite a few of them are quite influential. Following store openings at home base Los Angeles, Carmel and New York City, the coveted golf brand has landed in Miami. The Malbon store occupies a 1,404 sq.ft. unit on the ground floor of a low-rise structure in the city’s Coconut Grove area which was originally built in 1925, but fully renovated in 2021. The interior design, created by Los Angeles-based architecture and design practice 22RE, aims to offer shoppers a tranquil getaway from the city’s hustle and bustle.
Interestingly, the chosen aesthetic is even intended to reflect the spiritual appeal of golf. As such, the premises are anchored by a meditative core which is captured by a meticulously installed pattern of handmade Mexican tiles that expands outwards, while the monochromatic square archways and custom stucco walls mimic the city’s coral rocks. The chosen hue, a soft green, is a nod to the serenity of the natural world. Despite the soothing serenity, the Malbon retail space also boasts an industrial edge, starting with a metal ring adorned with the Malbon name in neon lights and a matching aluminium grid ceiling as an appropriate backdrop. Right below sit two sleek custom-made steel benches, each facing recessed metal shelving units and display space, and tie in with the sales counter and cladding of the store’s back wall.
