South Korea undeniably is a nation of die-hard foodies – but then again, which country in the Far East isn’t? – and as a consequence, alluring establishments where to indulge excessively can be found on almost every street corner. But given the increasing affluence of its dwellers, food here comes in an abundant variety, giving rise to a new generation of specialised eateries and shops in the country’s major cities, but most of all in Seoul. A little while ago Punoya‘s newest outpost opened its doors, just a few blocks away from the historic Gyeongbok Palace in the Anguk neighbourhood. The shop of the budding Japanese-style pudding shop chain occupies a 25 sqm. (269 sq.ft.) ground floor space designed by local interior design studio EVBR, and is flanked by traditional Korean dwellings.

While maintaining the core concept of other Punoya locations, primarily focused on takeout service, the new branch offers a unique experience with the option for immediate on-site tasting. Given the small size of the products, Punoya stores have always occupied modest spaces. In order to make the store stand out from its surroundings where many well-established eateries are present, a simplified yet alluring façade has been created which not only puts Punoya‘s merchandise front and centre, but also signals its heritage. Inspired by the packaging of the puddings, an inner volume is placed diagonally within, giving the design a dynamic edge. Facing the façade, the right-hand area was designed to allow purchases directly from outside, while effectively distributing the store’s functions and mitigating the constraints of the limited space.

Adjacent to the entrance on the right, a pudding showcase displays the coveted puddings. A unique challenge arose from the street trees along the sidewalk, which narrowed certain sections. To address this, the front portion of the store has been recessed, creating additional space by setting the interior back. When stepping inside, shoppers find a package art wall on the left, while a sales counter is situated on the right. Each area incorporates functional details that complement the pudding products. The menu at Punoya lists six tasty pudding flavours six flavours—custard, matcha, chocolate, annindofu, hojicha, and sweet potato. However, the flavour selection will slightly vary per season, subtly signalling the shop’s artisanal approach. © superfuture
