Not your average ice cream parlour. While this assessment may seem perfectly clear to most, a closer look will surely entice a more niche and unexpected demographic. Licky Chan was founded by Rick Joore, Kit Yin Chan, Shin Chang and Penny Ng, a group of young multitasking creatives and entrepreneurs who set up several venues across Kuala Lumpur‘s sprawling metropolitan area, but it isn’t just a shop where to indulge in artisanal ice cream flavours. Shaking up the traditional ice cream parlour concept, Licky Chan‘s menu also lists pastry, cocktails and wines, and surprisingly, it’s where you get a tattoo done by tattoo shop The Poke Guy. Following two downtown outpost, Licky Chan recently inaugurated what’s arguably its most striking branch. However, this one does not feature an in-house tattoo shop. It’s situated in a hospitality and entertainment enclave of Subang Jaya, a leafy suburban area of town.

The store measures 1,400 sq.ft. (130 sqm.) and features a bold, colour-infused interior design by Kuala Lumpur-based design practice DualSpace Studio which offers an immersive shopping experience. Using a concise palette of painted plywood and acrylic, a cleverly thought out construction and playfully graphic division of both colours and planes, creates a visual layering that effortlessly tickles the senses. The main store area is anchored by an L-shaped service station and ice cream display freezer set below a lowered canopy with a front comprising a neon yellow acrylic container filled with coloured balls. The latter ties in with the service counter’s caged front filled with neon yellow balls. Behind a closed door, offering ample street views, a separate seating section can be found with matching furnishings, but the floor is covered in gravel.
