There has never been a shortage of good dining options in Berlin, but few places offer an unpretentious, design-led dining spot serving ‘honest’ Central European fare as the newly opened Trio does. Nestled in the city’s buzzing Mitte district, the eatery is the newest venture of hospitality entrepreneurs Eva Aiken, Clemens Roesch and Vadim Otto Ursus who’ve previously worked together for a number of years in the latter’s happening dining establishment in the city’s Prenzlauer Berg area. Situated on the ground floor of a late 1920s residential building by Hans Poelzig, a local architect who also prolifically dabbled in painting and set design, and features a soothing green-infused interior design by Vienna-based architecture and design practice joyjoy.

Preserving the architectural character of the building, as well as the openness of the space, Trio features a light and airy feel thanks to a considerate new configuration. The homey dining setting seats up to 70 guests and is anchored by an inviting wooden counter paired with matching stools, and is surrounded by additional seating configurations, including booths and an elongated bench paired with wooden tables and chairs. The in-built furnishings and the red linoleum tables have been custom-made. An open kitchen allows ample peeks of the culinary action of chef Vadim Otto Ursus and his staff. As said, Trio serves dishes familiar in Central Europe, such as Alb lentil stew and mustard eggs, Austrian fried chicken, Venison goulash, Beuschel, and Trout Müllerin, all made with locally sourced organic ingredients.
