Seven years after opening a flagship store at home base Antwerp, fashion designer Christian Wijnants expands his retail footprint with a new outpost in Berlin. The boutique is a collaborative effort with the brand’s savvy German sales agency Melagence, and as such, the brand has been able to steer clear from the overtly luxury Kurfürstendamm shopping artery and the hipster shopping grounds of Mitte, settling instead in the edgier Tiergarten district where the boutiques of similar contemporary brands such as Andreas Murkudis and Acne Studios can be found. Occupying a lofty 100 sqm. unit spread across two levels of a listed late-19th century building with an ornate façade, it features a contrasting minimalist interior design by Berlin-based architecture and design practice Gonzales Haase.

Large windows allow in floods of daylight and ample views of walls covered in textured silver cladding that reflect the light from the lightbulbs on rows of suspended metal beams. Adding a warm note to the setting are the hand-curved brass hanging bars and matching sales counter. One level up, by way of just a few stairs, a section in a soft Giò Ponti pistachio green unfolds where the fitting rooms can be found. Inside, silver curtains are paired with brass elements and plush carpeting in a matching hue. One of the suspended metal light beams stretches into the corridor, subtly connecting the two levels along the way. Interestingly, the diagonal light lines alternate between warm and cold depending on the area they are in. The new Christian Wijnants store carries the brands full range of women’s apparel and accessories.
