Founded in 1997, Kasina started out as a skateboard store in Busan and has since gone leaps and bounds, becoming one of South Korea‘s leading sneaker and streetwear retailers with several outposts nationwide, including branded stores for other brands and cafés. As of late, the company also operates a new boutique in the fast-emerging Seongdong area of Seoul. Occupying a lofty 231 sqm. unit on the ground floor of a repurposed red brick building, the store sees an interior design by local architecture practice unseenbird. As this is a retail space designated to host Kasina‘s ongoing rotation of pop-up stores, the setting needed to be a blank canvas of sorts yet also have sufficient character. So, the walls, pillars, ceiling and flooring have been dipped in a white hue with a gray finish, and are paired with sturdy furnishings and shelving made of stainless steel. Special attention has been given to the shoe displays which feature tilted shelves to showcase the merchandise better. Interestingly, the columns that line the walls have been intentionally installed to create display areas by way of shelving and clothing racks that are suspended in between. A mezzanine level, used for events, has been installed at the entrance to optically enlarge the space, and a huge pillar along the stairs going up houses a nifty fitting room with a curved LED colour conversion Barrisol wall.
