The very first outpost of coffee parlour Hannam Berg in Seoul – mind you, the hospitality format has already spawned a new branch in the Dosan area of town – occupies no less than three floors of an inconspicuous low-rise building in one of the many meandering alleys of the Hannam-dong district. Arguably the most fun place to sit back, when weather permits that is, is the rooftop. Measuring 95 sqm. (1,023 sq.ft.), the rooftop is a pristine, uncluttered oasis created by local interior design practice yolllley studio. Here, a pavilion of glass and steel takes centre stage, accommodating a sleek service station and seating below a large ceiling window and equally large skylights. The design concept aims to create a secluded refuge that’s not only far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but also one with an added meditative value. The monochrome white layout is understated, featuring merely an elongated bench which extends outside from within the pavilion, similarly to a counter extended from the counter inside, another bench on the street side, an outdoor sink, and a storage unit. As said, Hannam Berg is first and foremost a coffee parlour serving various coffee concoctions using Australian Duke Coffee grinds, but also lists chocolate milk, various teas and grapefruit juice on the menu.
