Following boutiques in the leafy shopping areas of Aoyama and Daikanyama, eyewear brand Oliver Peoples plants a flag in Marunouchi, a downtown business district, but also one that’s dotted with a sizeable number of high-end stores. The company secured a 60 sqm. (646 sq.ft.) unit at the low-rise extension of the 30-storey Marunouchi Nijubashi Building, a stone’s throw away from Tokyo Station. The interior design, created in-house under supervision of Oliver Peoples‘ creative director Giampiero Tagliafierri, takes cues from the 1970s space age aesthetic alongside California influence, and is arguably best captured by the product displays, where each frame sits in its own individual ‘orb’ design. The custom displays provide a unique, gallery-like shopping experience where each piece is interesting alone, yet together blends as one cohesive whole.

Upon entering the store, shoppers are greeted by two large metal chandeliers, each with a myriad of lightbulbs, before encountering a circular display with a potted tree at its core. Flooring of large terrazzo tiles is paired with ribbed concrete walls, alternated by sections in timber and shiny metal. In turn, the walls are partly overlaid by contrasting displays, fluffy faux fur in the front, and as previous said, orb-style equivalents in the back. Alongside the custom pieces designed by Tagliaferri, the Oliver Peoples store store also features vintage elements to balance the newness. In celebration of the opening, the store will be the first in the market to exclusively launch the Custom Lens Programme which allows eyewear to be personalised to match unique configurations and preferred colours. The new Oliver Peoples store carries the brand’s full range of men’s and women’s optical eyewear and sunglasses.
