The reservoir of creative talent in Indonesia has been evident for a long time, but only in recent years has the appreciation of the home crowd soared to new heights previously only enjoyed by foreign designers and brands. Especially local fashion has gone leaps and bounds, featuring better quality and more sophisticated silhouettes, and to such an extent, demand is also gradually increasing abroad. As the country’s epicentre of fashion and lifestyle, Jakarta has traditionally had a well-developed retail infrastructure, featuring not only boutiques of all the names from fashion’s upper echelon in glitzy shopping centres, but also increasingly, noteworthy independent boutiques tucked away in leafy suburbs such as Kemang and Kebayoran Baru. As of late, a pop-up store called Ministry of Cool has emerged in the Indonesian capital’s fast-evolving retail scene, stocking the designs of eight up-and-coming Indonesian brands. Interestingly, the ephemeral space is an initiative of Plaza Indonesia, a leading luxury shopping centre in the heart of Jakarta, and obviously, it has opened its doors right here. The interior design is simple and functional yet oozing a young bubbly vibe. A timber pathway leads from the entrance directly to the sales counter and is flanked on either side by four slatted display tables, each representing a different label. The Ministry of Cool pop-up store carries designs by AMOTSYAMSURIMUDA, Danjyo Hiyoji, Imaji Studio, Lekat Dua, Money Man, Rigio, Wilsen Willim and Wastu, and remains open until further notice.
