Memphis is back! Well, sort of. The design and architecture group, founded in 1980 by a Ettore Sottsass, shook up the world of design with whimsical and colour-infused furniture pieces and other home decoration designs which were basically a ‘fuck you’ statement against what was considered good taste at the time. The design group still exists, but has been pushed back into the global limelight thanks to an initiative of Anthony Vaccarello. The creative director at iconic fashion house Saint Laurent is a fan of Memphis‘ outspoken creations, and on the occasion of his upcoming 40th birthday, he has collaborated with the Milan-based group to launch a design showcase at the Saint Laurent flagship stores in Paris and Los Angeles. On display is a curated range of exemplary designs by various members of the groundbreaking design group, including furniture pieces, ceramic objects and textile accessories (on through Jun 23). Additionally, a selection of rare books representing the history and works of Memphis will also be presented. And that’s not all. An exclusive Memphis-inspired capsule collection by Vaccarello, comprising two multicoloured checkered hoodies, two dresses, a shirt and two pairs of sneakers, has been simultaneously revealed at the two retail spaces.

Publishers Note
Just to be clear – superfuture® is a design blog and not a political commentator. No surprise there. The scope of our content has always been global and borderless, however that can often mean covering projects in countries where we will not agree with the politics or actions of those countries. In a world that’s as screwed up as ever right now, the focus of our support is to those designers, architects and other creatives who aim to make the world a more liveable one – as opposed to people that try their hardest to destroy it. So if a project hits our desk and we like it based on its design credentials, we may choose to publish regardless of its location or creators nationality. superfuture® has always been inclusive and hopes for all current wars, aggression, violence, hate and extremism to end.
