A decade ago, Jarno Kooiman established his eponymous gallery in Rotterdam, a veritable treasure trove of pristine twentieth-century furniture pieces and artworks. Widening both his scope and client base, but maintaining a similarly discerning gaze, the design maven has recently opened a second gallery space in the city. Called Fundamente, the new venue is situated smack in the middle of town, occupying two floors at Het Industriegebouw, a listed post-war building and an emerging hub for creative professionals and related small businesses. Interestingly, it aims to attract a younger yet in-the-know clientele, and as such, the offerings at Kooijman’s second venture have been tweaked and are more diversified and specifically selected for this demographic. Both floors are dotted with trophy pieces in various styles and representing different eras, ranging from Scandinavian design and limited edition items from French ateliers, to pieces which flaunt distinct Italian or South American influences. Fundamente‘s premises seamlessly match its design focus, and the various settings, brimming with alluring gems, are bound to inspire both aspiring and seasoned design aficionados.
