Hospitality scenes in cities across the planet are in a constant flux, resonating with economic circumstances, consumer preferences, and other factors. In the case of Kyiv, the lookout may, quite understandably, not be the most glorious at the moment, but that doesn’t prevent the launch of new, happening hospitality concepts that resonate with a young and savvy crowd. One of the striking openings of late is Union, a modern bistro concept in the city’s historic downtown Podil district. Called Union, the bistro occupies a 132 sqm. (1,421 sq.ft.) unit on the ground floor of a modern five-storey residential structure built in 2021. The interior design, created by AKZ Architectura, an architecture and interior design practice based in Ukrainian capital, makes clever use of the building’s concrete shell, and which matches very well with the applied material palette of stone, wood, glass, ceramic tiles, and yes, more concrete.

The open-plan premises are anchored by a large communal table with a marble top and is paired with Alias designer chairs. It’s flanked by an open kitchen on one side, and additional seating configurations on all other sides, comprising cushioned benches paired with tables and chairs and bar-style seating alongside the front window. Mind you, additional seating can be found on the outdoor terrace when weather permits. The kitchen counter is clad in glazed Italian Mutina tiles in a green hue, adding to the austere setting a compelling sense of vibrancy. Although distinctly contemporary, the interior design embeds collections of Ukrainian ceramics in designated sections, which also serve as storage, adding a unique visual layer to Union‘s interior. The menu at Union lists tasty breakfast options, various main courses, coffee concoctions and matcha, cocktails, and other alcoholic beverages. © superfuture
