By pairing boutique hospitality with urban culture, The Slow has carved out a unique niche for itself on Bali‘s sun-drenched shores. The cultural element is reflected by the property’s art collection which can be seen throughout the premises, but it’s also nurtured by a fruitful bond with China Heights, a Sydney-based gallery and studio which is well rooted in the city’s creative scene. Featuring a programme of rotating exhibitions at Room 13, the hotel’s very own exhibition space, it currently presents the Spiritual Children solo show by Sydney-based professional skateboarder and multimedia artist Brett Chan. The New Zealand-born creative has made a name for himself using traditional geometric patterning which represents his urban community. Irreverent and always exploring new boundaries, Chan provokes discussion surrounding the relationship between modern day and traditional historical cultures, and identity in contemporary environments, using a style which is slightly reminiscent of the late Keith Haring. One of Chan’s other passions is music and film, and this solo show at The Slow also marks the launch of his new 9-track album, each song reflecting a computer painting that will be on display (on through Nov 22).
