Founded five years ago in Shanghai by architects Yu Ting and Erni Min, design practice Wutopia Lab intentionally draws clues from the city’s hybrid urban fabric, focusing on different aspects of urban life to interpret modern lifestyle and create meaningful architecture. Celebrating Wutopia Lab‘s fifth anniversary, Ting has invited School of Design‘s architecture professor Fan Wenbing to curate a special anniversary exhibition at Sinan Books‘ swish flagship store in Shanghai, a retail space which happens to have been designed by the design practice a few months ago. Instead of pursuing a regular architectural exhibition and present models and videos, the duo decided to flaunt the magical realism side of Wutopia Lab‘s architectural practice. Held at the store’s compact gallery space on the third floor, Ting has displayed an abstract set of landscapes as his company’s symbolic next step and invited 12 studios for the completion of the project. The result shows 12 curvy mountains, captured by bright red transparent screens, each featuring a QR code that can be scanned to reveal the online details of the project (on through Dec 28).
