Founded only four years ago by Canadian designers Marc-André Garand, Julien Gauthier and William Lessard, menswear brand École de Pensée brand offers a timeless men’s wardrobe essentials made from high-quality Italian and Japanese fabrics. The trio’s silhouettes have resonated well with a demographic of discerning males both home and abroad, featuring a growing number of reputable stockists at their home base Montreal, but also in San Francisco and Tokyo. Meanwhile, the designers have stepped up their efforts to raise École de Pensée‘s profile by presenting their collections at London Fashion Week, and as of late, they’ve also launched a standalone boutique in an affluent and largely residential neighbourhood of Montreal. The retail space occupies a 1,800 sq.ft. (167 sqm.) ground floor unit of a modest red brick structure and features an interior design that oozes bachelor pad, albeit a very stylish one. Beautiful lacquered timber flooring is paired with walls painted with patina effect and, in some sections, also embellished with frame moulding. Furnishings and fixtures add a visual layer that combines both old and new. Concrete volumes serve as sales desk, displays, and side tables, and go well with the sleek black steel clothing racks and suspended frame with ceiling spotlights. Two different seating areas, both furnished with wooden shelving, a vintage Danish design chair and sofa, further heighten the sense of home. At the far end of the store, two fitting rooms are situated. The École de Pensée store carries the brand’s seasonal men’s collections, in addition to a curated selection of compatible goods, such as Toyo Sasaki glassware, cutlery by Wasabi, vintage ceramics by Peter and Klaus Müller, and caps and hats by Larose.
