Originally from New York City, John Perello a.k.a. JonOne started his career as a graffiti artist when he was a teen tagging as many of the city’s subway cars. In the early 1980s he founded the notrious graffiti group 156 All Starz, but eventually moved to Paris in 1987, and it was there that he gained full recognition as one of today’s leading urban artists. Interestingly, his French period saw an artistic transition to movement, colour, freedom of his line, somewhere in between abstract art and street spirit, and revealing his imagination and his optimistic vision of society. In the French capital JonOne met designer agnès b. and first showed his work at galerie du jour in 1989. The duo’s friendship has resulted in numerous collabs, including additional shows at the aforementioned venue, live paintings, books, and also artist tees. Coinciding with the launch of the latest joint effort, the so-called Candy Crush items that he created for the agnès b. S/S 2018 collection, the agnès b. galerie boutique in Soho hosts JonOne in Gotham, an exhibition of three of his large canvases, in addition to works by other artists from the 156 All Starz group who have created these especially for the show (on through May 20).
