What was previously a dodgy coffee shop recently transformed into an edgy meeting place for coffee aficionados in Shevchenko, a leafy residential neighbourhood in downtown Kyiv. We’re talking oui.non.café which, as its name and spelling already implies, appeals to a demographic of savvy young things. The venue occupies a mere 35 sqm. (377 sq.ft.) ground floor space with a setting by created by Ukrainian interior designer Danil Pestov. Given the measurements, the premises understandably are sparsely furnished. A large decorative mirror at the entrance, adorned by a graphic motif by Maxim Shahrai, is a checkpoint of sorts that shows the space and reflects guests chilling in the main area while it also inspires to take photos and post them on social media. Foldable chairs offer endless seating configurations in the uncluttered front section, and are backed up by benches lining the wall. Similar to the walls, all are captured by pristine white materials. At the far end a full-fledged service counter can be found, clad entirely in shiny steel. The utilitarian aesthetic is further boosted by suspended tubular lights in matching metal housing. A small projector, attached to the bare concrete ceiling, beams oui.non.café‘s concise menu of coffee concoctions, tea and matcha onto the back wall.
