Similarly to many cities around the planet, the coastal city of Qinhuangdao, situated a three-hour drive away from Beijing, has given a former industrial area a new lease on life. Baptised Xigang Garden, it’s a 1,200-acre site in the city’s harbour district which has now become home to new creative businesses, cultural events, and lavish high-end weddings. One of the latest establishments to open on the premises is Moutreen Café, a hybrid hospitality concept which adds to the area’s ongoing buzz. It’s housed in a voluminous, 1,600 sqm. (17,222 sq.ft.) former warehouse and sees an interior design by Beijing Shanfang Bamboo Art Design Co. which honours the building’s industrial legacy, while also pairing it with an abundance of distinct contemporary design elements.
Bare walls and an exposed ceiling with large wooden beams form the backdrop of a series of different facilities and settings. Moutreen Café features two service counters, one embedded at the base of a large wooden structure featuring both tiered seating for live gigs, and a book bar with additional seating on an elevated platform right on top. At the centre of the venue, a second wooden counter can be found, partially clad in a marbled coating, and even incorporating a large industrial machine element. A sizeable pillar structure, adorned with neon lighting and a mesh canopy, signals its position from afar. The other sections feature various homey seating configurations furnished with comfy sofas, chairs and ottomans, lush potted plants, but also include a full-fledged meeting space and a study corner.
