It’s an undeniable fact that Chanel is on a roll across the planet, either opening new boutiques or revamping existing key flagships. And being the retail epicentre of one of the French fashion house’s most important markets, Tokyo isn’t overlooked in the global effort to further raise its profile. We’re talking the Chanel pop-up store which has opened at Daikanyama T-Site Garden Gallery in the city’s eponymous neighbourhood, featuring the brand’s 2018-2019 Cruise Collection. The setting of the ephemeral space takes cues from La Pausa, the enormous cruise ship prop used last year when the collection was first presented at the Grand Palais in Paris. The most striking elements are the ship funnel-inspired columns, each partially sliced and with shifted parts, and serving as displays. One is also situated outside, backlit as if a beacon, beckoning Chanel fans from afar. The backdrop of the store comprises of a backlit grid, referencing Shoji panels in traditional Japanese architecture, replete with porthole windows filled with coveted items. Right outside, a concise installation was erected to celebrate the opening and serve as a festive backdrop for the high-profile opening party. The Chanel pop-up store carries the full range of items from the 2018-2019 Cruise Collection (open through Dec 16).
