The urban sprawl of Mexico City is dotted with a multitude of interesting venues, but when it comes to living the good life, few neighbourhoods can match the offerings of leafy Colonia Roma. its streets are lined with early 20th century mansions, and have long been home to some of the Mexican capital’s hottest boutiques and restaurants. as of late, a new dining establishment has wowed even the most discerning of palates, adding to the neighbourhood’s reputation as a hedonist haven. Aptly called Meroma, it’s a collab effort of Mercedes Bernal and Rodney Cusic, two Mexican chefs who’ve honed their skills at a string of top eateries in New York City, London and Rome, before returning home to launch their very own gourmet dining concept. Meroma is housed a 1980s mansion, occupying 180 sqm. (1,938 sq.ft.) set across two floors and three main spaces. The interior design, created by Mexico City-based Oficina de Práctica Arquitectónica, sees a distinct look and feel for each section. After crossing a secluded courtyard, guests enter the ground floor lounge where they’ll marvel at a huge monolithic concrete terrazzo bar.
It’s a destination in its own right, luring in passers by for a pit stop, but also serving as an antechamber, and a rather alluring one at that, of the main dining room that follows. The seating space is formed by a curved wooden panel from which an elongated bench emerges, inviting guests to sit back for an aperitif before dinner. The intimate dining room, seating only 35 guests, is marked by an open ceiling with a glass-encased gazebo on top that allows in floods of daylight and views of the trees outside. The chosen palette is subtle, comprising of terrazzo and pre-cast concrete elements, and combined with many windows – mind you, there’s an entire wall covered in a grid of openings – it lends the dining space a secluded patio feel. The custom-designed white oak furnishings by Comité de Proyectos are simple yet very fitting, and allow for a flexible configuration. upstairs on the outdoor terrace, 16 more guests can be seated. The setting here is defined by wooden flooring, walls clad in granite tiles and sleek metal furniture. the menu at Meroma revolves around a concise number of dishes made from sustainable produce that’s sourced from a local network of small producers.
