Mediterranean dining has gained a sophisticated foothold in Shanghai with the opening of Terrakota, a bistro-inspired concept with an elevated approach to the region’s multifaceted cuisine. The restaurant occupies a spacious 450 sqm. (4,844 sq.ft.) unit with an outdoor terrace on the premises of a redeveloped former warehouse in the city’s bustling Jing’an district. The interior design, created by local architecture and interior design practice MDO, sees an infusion of terracotta tiles which covers the walls, the entire open kitchen, all floors, and also the outdoor terrace. The exposed ceiling lays bare an intricate interplay of wooden beams and swaths of beautiful timber. The terrace is lined with lush plants, and extends from the open interior, optically expanding the indoor space. This section comes with a retractable roof, allowing proper dining al fresco and unobstructed city skyline views when weather permits. Terrakota‘s open layout is intentional as it encourages guests to interact with the space, creating the buzz of a true social hub. However, one floor up, a private dining space is readily available for those in need of a more intimate atmosphere. Adding to the carefully calibrated vibe are various furnishings and objects, crafted from cotton, linen, oak, leather, and ceramic, which seamlessly adapt to the various settings.
