The rotation of window installations at the Hermès store on Amsterdam‘s luxury shopping thoroughfare P.C. Hooftstraat consistently rank among the most evocative in the Dutch capital, and the latest iteration is no exception. For the upcoming Autumn season, Hermès has tapped Brussels-based French artist Élise Peroi to create an installation which once again is inspired by the 2024 theme The Spirit of the Faubourg. Peroi has crafted three large framed textile works, or rather, ‘woven’ paintings, each one occupying the store’s windows. Aptly entitled A Stream of Threads, the works embed an array of references which not only highlight the design legacy of the iconic fashion house, but also its sophisticated craftsmanship. The first frame depicts a horse and its saddle, the very origins of Hermès, followed by an interpretation of the Faubourg‘s roof and enchanting garden, and in the smallest window, a ship sails through a surrealist landscape. The installation comprises intricately woven threads, made of silk fabric which has been dyed and cut to create new threads with linen blended in, and using a double warping technique. This creates a three-dimensional surface in which the space between the threads becomes Peroi’s artistic discourse, conveying the vibration of memories and the passing of time. © superfuture
