Founded in 2013 Chongqing, fashion store SND – an abbreviation of Selection of Nonconformist Design – has since rapidly expanded nationwide with a string of striking, design-led retail spaces. The newest SND store which recently opened its doors is in Chengdu, a fast-emerging fashion and lifestyle hub which is hot on the heels of the retail landscape of the more established first-tier cities, such as Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. In the Sichuan province capital, SND has secured 650 sqm. (6,997 sq.ft.) spread across different levels within a standalone building at Luxlakes Eco City, a sizeable upscale suburban development project south of the city which, as its name already implies, sees glitzy low-rise and high-rise apartment buildings in verdant green landscaped settings with a number of meandering manmade lakes. The interior design, created by the brand’s in-house design team, takes cues from high-speed trains as many travel from Chengdu to SND‘s home base Chongqing (a distance of around 315 kilometres or 196 miles) using this highly convenient mode of transport.
As such, the premises see a series of differently designed sections embedding train travel references. Interestingly, SND invited three fashion brands, Lemaire, Marine Serre and Wooyoungmi, to create exclusive branded corners on the premises. Mind you, it’s the first time ever SND has collaborated in this manner with fashion brands. The Lemaire section features wood with a centuries-old history, sourced from Chinese architecture, utilising simple processes and resource reuse which aim to echo the brand’s renowned minimalist elegance. The Marine Serre space adheres to the brand’s core value of regeneration, using second-hand furniture for displays and hosting an environmentally-friendly screen printing activity. Last but not least, the Wooyoungmi section features a special installation inspired by the brand’s latest items, combining avant-garde design and art. © superfuture
