Already 10 years at the helm of Alexander McQueen, creative director Sarah Burton continues to surprise both the fashion professionals and the aficionados with stunning collections that honour the house’s edgy legacy, and yet, always take it up a notch in terms of its style evolution. Yesterday’s presentation of its much anticipated A/W 2023 Collection at Paris Fashion Week proved to be no exception. The stately Hôtel des Invalides was the venue of a star-studded show that presented superb tailoring, surprising volumes, and yes, that inimitable Alexander McQueen edge. The designer took ample inspiration from human anatomy, the anatomy of clothing, and the anatomy of flowers.

As said, there’s strong emphasis on tailoring, but also on cut, proportion and silhouette. It was, in fact, all about the classic subverted: turned inside out and upside down. Volume is strict or exploded, garments are dissected: slashed, sliced and twisted. Shoulders are strong and waists are narrow. Heeled trousers elongate the leg: the bumster in reverse. Also, the most prominent motif in the collection is the orchid, in its rarer forms cultivated but, after the daisy, the most common flower. It thrives in the air, resists being rooted and grows in the wild. Extraordinarily beautiful yet infinitely adaptable, the orchid mimics both predator and prey. Shown here are ten looks from Alexander McQueen‘s A/W 2023 Collection that we’ve particularly swooned over.
