As a city totally geared towards the good life, living in Seoul comes with a slew of perks that cater to the most discerning, including an on-trend hairdo. Enter TAN, a popular hair salon which has recently relocated in Yeonnam, a neighbourhood just north of the popular Hongdae shopping and entertainment area which has increasingly gentrified, taking in the latter’s overflow of new businesses. TAN salon occupies 100 sqm. (1,076 sq.ft.) spread across two compact floors of a modern building, and features an interior design by local architecture practice Oftn Studio. Given the limited dimensions of the premises and the intention to avoid a generic salon atmosphere, the open-plan settings are void of counters.
Instead, the salon is furnished with large closets. Each floor comes with both a dispensing room and a shampoo room, while the service stations merely comprise of a comfy chair paired with a mirror that’s either suspended on a steel pole or wall-mounted, or hair washing equipment. A large sofa is positioned near the monumental steel staircase which connects the two floors. All the chairs at TAN are crafted from metal and upholstered with a contrasting material, and also feature a footrest that gives them the allure of an object. Large floor-to-ceiling windows on each floor allow in plenty of daylight, further adding to the salon’s airy and spacious atmosphere. TAN is staffed by four seasoned hair stylists who offer various haircutting and hair dying services to a savvy female and male client base.

Just to be clear – superfuture® is a design blog and not a political commentator. No surprise there. The scope of our content has always been global and borderless, however that can often mean covering projects in countries where we will not agree with the politics or actions of those countries. In a world that’s as screwed up as ever right now, the focus of our support is to those designers, architects and other creatives who aim to make the world a more liveable one – as opposed to people that try their hardest to destroy it. So if a project hits our desk and we like it based on its design credentials, we may choose to publish regardless of its location or creators nationality. superfuture® has always been inclusive and hopes for all current wars, aggression, violence, hate and extremism to end.
