As discussed with Axel Arigato‘s creative director Max Svärdh in an interview earlier this month, the Swedish sneaker brand has swung the doors open of its new flagship outpost in Munich, its very first after pop-ups at a department store elsewhere in the Bavarian capital and in Berlin. The store occupies a 143 sqm. (1,539 sq.ft.) unit on the ground floor of Palais Moy, a 19th-century Neoclassical building by Bavarian architect Leo von Klenze. The interior design, created in collaboration with Stockholm-based architect and longtime collaborator Christian Halleröd, sees a fresh minimalist interior aesthetic that’s in stark contrast with the building’s ornate façade. An orderly steel grid ceiling overlaid with rows of tubular lights and both flooring and walls in a similar soft grey hue form the über-understated backdrop of chunky travertine display tables, a recurring material in Axel Arigato‘s retail design, sleek floor-to-ceiling metal shelving, and a curved bench and stools by Marco Campardo, an Italian-born designer who’s now based in London. Adding a playful note to the setting is a sinuous yellow carpet, while large-sized mirrors optically enlarge the store’s dimensions. The new Axel Arigato store carries the brand’s full range of sneakers, apparel items and lifestyle items, and in celebration of the store opening a series of in-store events were held to connect with relevant local communities.
