Shopping in one of the British capital’s most dynamic retail zones gains an uplifting spiritual edge with the new art installation by Lakwena Maciver. The London-based artist, known for her acid-bright colour paintings with bold typographic texts, has infused the Covent Garden area with her distinctive artistry, featuring hand-painted bollards in striking colour schemes in Floral Street, and as if to herald better post-lockdown times ahead, flags emblazoned with positive messages in King Street and Henrietta Street. Commissioned by Covent Garden, ‘Nothing Can Separate Us’ is the powerful message Maciver has created for the flags on bustling King Street, while Floral Street’s colour pop bollards will also show off her skill in creating visceral and immersive art. This new installation follows the artist’s public installations at Tate Britain, Somerset House and the Southbank Centre on home turf, in addition to international showcases in Vienna and New York City, and follows previous collaborations with leading artists and designers such as Damien Hirst, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Anya Hindmarch, Charles Pétillon and Anthony Burrill. As said, the installation aims to visually enhance the shopping experience at Covent Garden, but also appeals to shoppers’ sensibilities on a different and, dare we say, more profound level (on through August).
