The pairing of legalised cannabis and Portland may not come as a surprise, but the fact that it concerns Portland, Maine and not Portland, Oregon probably is. Similarly to Oregon, the state of Maine actually is a frontrunner in the United States when it comes to the decriminalisation of marijuana. In fact, it was way back in 1976 that possession of small amounts of cannabis was no longer illegal, leading to the Marijuana Legalisation Act in 2016 which permits adults to legally grow and possess personal use quantities of cannabis while also licensing commercial cannabis production and retail sales. Parallel to developments cannabis-related retail across the border in Canada, local purveyors are stepping up to provide clients an elevated shopping experience. Behold SeaWeed Co.‘s new outpost in the city’s Bayside area.

Occupying a voluminous hangar-like structure with large floor-to-ceiling windows in an industrial zone, the interior design by Los Angeles-based architecture and design practice MAAM oozes upscale contemporary lifestyle, featuring an understated yet welcoming backdrop of pristine white walls, alternated by sections clad in matching glazed tiles, concrete flooring and an exposed metal ceiling. Furnishings in untreated timber, such as counters, display tables and cabinets, add a warm note to the setting, and combined with numerous potted plants, the store oozes an appealing homey vibe. The new SeaWeed Co. store stocks pre-rolls, vaporisers, and concentrates, in addition to a range of edible products containing CBD and THC, accessories, and emphasising the lifestyle concept, also a range of apparel items.
