In Indonesia‘s flourishing underground music scene, you’d expect Jakarta to be the major stage for bands and musicians, but instead of the capital city, it’s in fact Bandung which has proven to be the most fertile and preferred grounds for quirky talent. The newly opened outpost of Peels Records is indicative of the latter’s ongoing buzz, featuring not only a well-stocked record store, but also a cocktail bar and a sound room. The venue occupies a residential building from the Dutch colonial era in the plush Dago neighbourhood of town, and sees a colour-infused interior design created by the Peels Records team themselves. The result is an intimate contemporary setting with distinct retro touch – mind you, the bright orange hue alone is a major nod – which pulls music and vinyl aficionados from near and far to its doorstep. The record store section, featuring a curated selection of vinyl from various musical genres, is captured in a neutral hue, allowing the merchandise to pop, but when proceeding to the bar and sound room, there’s a sense of total immersion, and given the social function, that’s a good thing. The latter space comes with vintage JBL 4315 speakers, as well a Mastersound Radius 4 mixer, and of course, a pair of turntables.
