Windmills, tulips and bikes. From a distinct tourist angle, this conveniently much sums up the Netherlands, but the Dutch themselves, eager as always to trade and sell, enthusiastically cultivate this profile abroad. Founded little over a decade ago by fraternal duo Taco and Ties Carlier, Amsterdam-based bicycle manufacturer VanMoof banks on the country’s two-wheeled mobility obsession with a number of nifty tech innovations. Unsurprisingly, the bicycles have resonated well with a growing, forward-thinking demographic across the world, and the company aptly responded by opening branded retail spaces, and the latest store to open its doors is in Berlin. The retail space, situated smack in the middle of the popular Mitte district, sees a renewed collaboration with Dutch design practice ninetynine. Similar to other VanMoof stores, the premises feature a showroom, a service point and test ride centre, and all interior elements have been produced in a specific location before being shipped to the German capital. Bare concrete walls and cement resin flooring form the neutral backdrop of seaters and planters resembling street furniture and park benches. The back of the store, concealed by façade adorned by vertical oak slats, is home to the store’s workshop. Additional furnishings include a large-sized table and a combined storage and display unit. The new VanMoof store stocks the brand’s full bicycle range and services.
