As one of the planet’s leading hubs in finance, trade, logistics, art, and what not, Hong Kong has proven to be a resilient city. And even though it has fallen on hard times, life goes on as usual, and its sophisticated retail and hospitality infrastructure sees alluring new additions. In the latter category falls Soho House Hong Kong, the newest outpost of London-based members club Soho House. Occupying a 28-storey building in Sheung Wan, one of the most happening neighbourhoods on Hong Kong Island, the venue offers its members a number of plush facilities and settings, all designed by Soho House‘s in-house design team. Interestingly, the chosen aesthetic takes cues from local culture, notably the colour palettes and references from Hong Kong films and the work of renowned filmmakers such as Wong Kar-Wai.
Local influences, patterns and fabrics echo the rich jewel tones and hues of the city outside, and are mixed with international elements taken from Soho House‘s sister establishments across the planet. So, what’s to be found on the premises? Well, a space for almost any occasion or event. At the core of Soho House Hong Kong are the social spaces where members can sit back, mingle and meet each other: the Club Space, the house’s main meeting venue, in addition to the Drawing Room, Pool Room – indeed, it comes with a indoor pool but also a restaurant serving tasty seafood and meats from the barbecue – and a number private event spaces. The House Brasserie is set-up as an informal and cozy diner of a gentlemen’s club, and serves a menu of traditional local and Cantonese favourites such as Peking duck, Siu mei and Dim sum. Last but certainly not least, there’s the Main Bar which not only serves almost any liquid of choice, but also a menu of Chinese delicacies. The design of each of the aforementioned spaces is adorned by original pieces from a permanent art collection brought together by Kate Bryan, Head of Collections for Soho House.
The collection is entirely focused on artists who are born or based in Hong Kong, making it a celebration of the local art scene. Under the Soho Active moniker, the house offers members state-of-the-art techno gym machines, Watson gym equipment, a turf floor and BeaverFit training rigs across three floors. Mind you, there’s a wide range of classes available, including boxing, martial arts, bootcamp, strength training, yoga and Pilates. Soho Active has a dedicated HIIT area, yoga studio, and steam and sauna rooms. But that’s not all, folks. Similar to all other branches, Soho House Hong Kong connects with the local creative community through a specially curated events programme which includes everything from music, film, fashion, art, design and wellness. As of next Spring, co-working space Soho Works will open across nine floors of the building.
