Known for its quirky outlook and vibe, you could say Amsterdam does things differently than most other cities, and that includes youth culture. A graffiti scene emerged here in the late 1970s and early 1980s, before a wave of New York City-style wall scribblings became all the rage on the Old Continent. Individual style in the Dutch scene flourished, representing almost every youth tribe, from punk rockers and hooligans, to disco aficionados and other ‘deviant’ demographics. A newly released book, entitled Amsterdam On Tour, a collab effort of online retailer FRESHCOTTONCarhartt WIP, and graffiti artist and author AGAIN, that extensively documents the rise of Dutch graffiti until 1985. Mind you, over 30 of the most emblematic graffiti artists are covered by way of interviews and photographs, providing not only a in-depth view into the dynamic of this bygone era, but also a lesser known side of the Dutch capital. The number of interviews is quite elaborate, and includes the likes of N-Power, Hugo Kaagman, Ego, Shoe, Walking Joint, Again, Gasp, High, Yaki Kornblit, Blade, Rhyme, Delta, Cat22 and Jaz.
