The island nation has flaunted a high GDP for decades, thanks to its industrious citizens, but in today’s Singapore, a new generation aims to party – and obviously wind down – just as hard after office hours. As the home of the region’s most affluent consumers, the city boasts a lifestyle infrastructure that’s already top-notch. Foreign brands and concepts have traditionally resonated well here, but along with this new generation of local consumers, a savvy breed of homegrown hospitality entrepreneurs has emerged that skilfully anticipates the preferences of this discerning demographic. The Lo & Behold Group falls into the latter category, and it has successfully rolled out a network of modern – in one case also internationally acclaimed – venues across the city. The company’s latest openings is Le Bon Funk, a stylish wine bar and bistro, tucked away in Chinatown‘s maze of streets. It’s name is a playful nod to the general misconception that all natural wines taste funky – but as a true connoisseur, you obviously know they don’t.

The setting at Le Bon Funk loosely takes cues from Mid-Century modern design, and is captured by a palette of warm natural materials. The focal point of the compact ground floor space is a marble bar and its well-stocked brass wine rack. The matching backdrop, walls dipped in a soothing green hue, a rattan ceiling overlaid with a grid of slatted wood and tiled flooring, adds a subtle tropical touch. Seating in the front section comprises of exclusively of high stools, but behind the bar, the dining section can be found. Opposite an open kitchen with bar seating, dining tables are paired with chairs and sofas. Here, walls are have a mauve hue, and bold brass beams line the ceiling, making the atmosphere just a tad more formal. Le Bon Funk‘s wine list is curated by head sommelier Josée Yeomans, and is a celebration of people over place – winemakers over wine regions, leisure over labels. Foodwise, the establishment offers a matching number of unfussy yet delectable dishes that are ready to be shared, ranging from house-cured charcuterie to contemporary fine plates, all supervised by chef-owner Keirin Buck.
