thirteen years after opening a hotel in mexico city's swanky polanco district, w hotels opens a second, design-led mexican property on the pacific coast, a few kilometres northwest of puerto vallarta. named after its oceanside location, the w punta de mita is part of los veneros, a multi-use development dotted with various luxury resorts and pristine beaches. as with any of the luxury chain's properties, the design, a collab effort of aset/aomamister important design and starwood hotel's very own design team, draws inspiration from local culture and history, fusing colonial style with elements from indigenous huichoi tribes.

upon arrival, guests are greeted by an oversized huichol statue standing in a reflection pool, along with a fleet of colorful tuk tuks that whisk them from the main entrance to the welcome area and lobby, or living room in proper w hotel lingo, as well as around the grounds. the design-led concept is immediately evident by an artsy backdrop that includes papel picado backdrops, mexican wrestling masks and historical mexican figures with surfboards; mariachi instruments; candy skulls, and other regalia. the resort features 119 guest villas, in no less than eleven different categories, each with a different set of amenities or in different size.

and yes, for those who love to love large, an extreme wow villa is readily available. as this is luxury territory, expect these rooms to live up effortlessly to all modern standards, and then some. he way all of the aforementioned is embedded in a uniquely designed concept package is what's the main draw of w punta de mita. not surprisingly, the living room is set up as a social hub extraordinaire, replete with a setting that induces interaction and exploration. a big open space with no walls to divide the area, it's anchored by a rectangular bar that replicates an altar. adding up to the cozy grandeur is a sacrificially-inspired chandelier that's illuminated by 450 led lights.

the space is dotted with strands of beads around small cocktail tables for guests to sit and sip on handcrafted signature cocktails while listening to the sounds of the resident deejay in the corner leading to the wet deck. here, plenty of lounge chairs and v.i.p. cabanas, equipped with a flatscreen tv and well-stocked minibar, can be found under the walkway and around the pool. located on the grounds are three beautifully designed, locally-inspired murals by mexican graffiti artist nacho bernal, depicting different takes on the surrounding area. also on the premises are five dining facilities where to indulge in sumptuous concoctions, with the spice market – star chef jean-george vongerichten's hailed southeast asian dining concept – at its core. location: km 8.5 carretera punta de mita, desarollo costa banderas [punta de mita].
