As multi-faceted and surprising as Mexico City itself, the newly opened Masa gallery ticks all of our boxes. Founded by Age Salajõe, Héctor Esrawe, Brian Thoreen and Cristobal Riestra, a Mexican-American collective of art, design and architecture professionals who have shaken up the local scene with an ambitious venture that aims to blur the usual lines that divide creative disciplines, showcasing tightly curated art and design, and putting specifically Mexican craftsmanship in the spotlight along the way. As such, Masa is very much a hybrid – if not a transformative – entity that currently happens to occupy a lavish villa in the leafy Lomas de Chapultepec area of town for its first presentation. The inaugural show is entitled Collective/Collectible, curated in collab with Su Wu and Constanza Garza, sees pieces by artists and designers living in Mexico or having ties with the country, paired with archival works that show what artists themselves have long sought in the country. The result is a show with an unusual allure, combining works by artists rarely seen grouped together, including pieces by Masa‘s founders, Frida Escobedo, On Kawara, Pedro Reyes, Francis Alÿs and Tezontle Studio (on through Apr 13).
