Well, we didn’t see this one coming. But then again, it makes perfect sense. We’re talking the much-publicised collaboration between suitcase brand and LVMH-affiliated company RIMOWA and the quirkiest of brands in fashion’s upper echelon—Rick Owens. Since its inception in 1898, RIMOWA has always been a pioneer in the field of mobility, creating items that combine outstanding craftsmanship and innovation. Additionally, during the past few decades, RIMOWA has continued to create new worldviews through collaborations with outstanding brands, and now, as said, with Rick Owens. The collaboration has resulted in the so-called RIMOWA x Rick Owens Original Cabin Bronze, a unique carry-on luggage piece with a special look.
The collab suitcase embodies the beauty of free-spiritedness and individuality while reflecting the commitment to quality of both brands. By fusing Rick Owens‘ signature dark aesthetic with RIMOWA‘s skillful craftsmanship of aluminium which has been cultivated over many years, a one-of-a-kind item was born. Cult designer Rick Owens commented: ‘No matter how far or long my journey, I only take one carry-on bag. I wanted the exterior finish to be reminiscent of the bronzes of Giacometti, Brâncuși and Serra, and I wanted the interior to feel like a black leather glove.” He added, “I don’t need much, but I want those bare necessities to be as supernatural as possible’. Owens has given RIMOWA‘s iconic Original Cabin suitcase a touch of his own. The aluminium surface is hand-painted with pigments.
This process gives the aluminium an aged look, so no two suitcases are exactly alike. The patina deepens over time, adding to the unique character of the luggage piece. Interestingly, it’s the first RIMOWA suitcase to feature a leather interior. From the lining to the flex dividers, the entire interior of the suitcase is constructed from leather. The leather material used was personally selected by Owens, highlighting the skillful craftsmanship of both brands. The RIMOWA x Rick Owens Original Cabin Bronze suitcase is limited to 500 pieces worldwide and comes with a serial number and a lifetime warranty, just like other RIMOWA suitcases. It also includes a luggage tag made of real hairy calf leather by Rick Owens in Italy.
