Since Birkenstock has been snapped up by LVMH, the cult footwear brand gradually raised its profile, not only through strategic branding, but also by presenting itself more prominently in leading retail arenas across the planet. Following design-led standalone stores in Cologne and Boston, Birkenstock has planted a flag in Amsterdam‘s scenic Canal District with a retail space all its own. Mind you, only earlier this year the company opened a regional showroom in the Dutch capital, an event we’ve covered in a previous post. The store occupies the entire ground floor of an early 18th-century building with a traditional gable façade. The interior design, a collaborative effort of ADH Design and Carbon Studio, two design practices based in the Dutch capital, Honours the brand’s design legacy. The setting boasts a light palette of natural materials such as cork, leather, and stone, captured by design elements inspired by the city itself.

A custom-made cross-shaped cork display table takes centre stage in the store setting, and is, similarly to all other furnishings, crafted by local atelier Fiction Factory. Needless to say, the piece is a firm nod to the three crosses in Amsterdam’s coat of arms, while recycled stone bricks, which cover two display wall sections, evoke the architecture of the historic canal houses in the city’s UN World Heritage-listed Canal District. Additional furnishings and fixtures include a curved service counter with a cork top, which ties in with the aforementioned display table, and a matching low bench in the try-on area. All sections of the store are unified by herringbone parquet flooring. The new Birkenstock store carries the brand’s design classics, seasonal models, selections for Home & Kids, in addition to flexible footbeds, shoe care products, and also the recently launched Birkenstocks Care Essentials foot care collection. © superfuture
