At long last, Aesop has landed in Bangkok, opening a standalone boutique in achingly fashionable Thonglor, a fast-evolving neighbourhood known for its on-trend indie shops, eateries and art galleries. The boutique occupies a lofty 190 sqm. (2,045 sq.ft.) unit in a modern building right next to Lee House, a sizeable luxury residential complex. Mind you, it’s Aesop‘s only street-level retail space in all of Southeast Asia, and the interior design is created by Chiang Mai-based architecture practice Sher Maker. The premises feature a clean, understated design which incorporates repurposed materials, notably teak, which has been sourced from the building owner, and is in fact, an homage to not only the architectural legacy of Thailand‘s largely rural provinces, but also the surrounding neighbourhood.

As such, shoppers encounter a large volume with four sinks crafted from black granite which is a nod to a Kraba Din, a traditional earthen fire pit found in rural areas and integral to communal village life. It’s flanked on one side by shelving inspired by traditional Thai wood joinery and featuring plenty of Aesop bottles. Directly opposite, in a recessed nook, another sink can be found. In a separate space, the so-called Fa Lhai room, which is meticulously constructed from teak slats, a fragrance armoire can be found, laden exclusively with Aesop‘s olfactory merchandise. A two-seat sofa unit, a matching display unit and additional shelving at the far end complete the store setting. The new Aesop store stocks the brand’s full range face, body and hair care products, in addition to fragrances and home products. © superfuture
