Cosmetics brand Aesop may be famed for its exceptional design-led stores, but it also has knack for securing top locations. For the new Aesop store in Beijing, its very first in this sprawling city, the Melbourne-based company has secured a historic siheyuan or traditional courtyard residence in the downtown Dongcheng district that has been turned into a unique retail space. Given the structure’s historic and cultural significance, the interior design, created by local architecture practice atelier suasua, has been developed with great respect of the building’s architectural legacy. Mind you, the Aesop location is a replica of the residences once owned by a cousin of Puyi (1906-1967), the Qing dynasty’s iconic last emperor.

As such, the settings are dotted with classical Ming dynasty furniture and contemporary elements, while the outdoor space takes ample cues from the ancient practice of creating shaded, communal spaces for respite from summer heat. Upon entering the secluded courtyard, shoppers instantly experience the grandeur of this Aesop store, albeit in tweaked form—the classic pergola is reimagined here as a retractable structure, but draped in waterproof canvas and crimson xiangyunsha tea silk. A set of long benches, crafted from glazed tiles, frame a pair of immense recycled stone troughs reminiscent of the goldfish basins traditionally placed beneath pergolas. To one side, a tea station invites shoppers to engage in a moment of reflection and refreshment.

The main house is defined by high ceilings and wooden rafters which optimise both natural light and airflow. Inside, coveted Aesop merchandise is displayed in large teak structures inspired by classic step-beds, commonly found during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Each of these alcoves conceal red copper sinks that are only discovered once inside. Adjacent to the main hall, the east pavilion is transformed into a fragrance haven where to enjoy a series of unique olfactory experiences. The west pavilion is home to a tranquil ensuite where in-depth individual consultations are held. Step-bed-like structures with basins set against wooden bead curtains ensure privacy and serenity. The new Aesop store stocks the brand’s full range face, body and hair care products, in addition to fragrances and home products. © superfuture
