Since its inception in 1986, POLSPOTTEN has infused homes across the planet with contemporary Dutch flair with a playful edge. The home decor brand has built a string of leading depositories in 65 countries, but it’s on home turf where the company has had its very own standalone store. As of late, POLSPOTTEN has upgraded upgraded its entire operations by relocating both its head office and retail space to the Dutch capital’s scenic Canal District. Situated on the lofty ground floor of a former school building erected in 1868, the store sees an interior design by Amsterdam-based design practice S-P-A-C-E. Aligned with the company’s adage Add play to space, the various settings offer an immersive shopping experience, but it’s one embedded with reinterpreted archetypes. Needless to say, colour is omnipresent and in a variety of terracotta-inspired hues, boosting the jolly atmosphere even further. The elongated POLSPOTTEN retail space is divided by floor-to-ceiling display walls with three different arches—a triangular-shaped one, followed by a circular arch, and a rectangular arch at the far end, all demarcating different sections of the brand’s collection.
A corridor runs parallel to retail space, and a series of large cut-outs in the side wall reveal a giant multi-tier shelving unit laden with a sheer endless range of pieces from the POLSPOTTEN archive, semi-concealing the company’s offices at the back of the building. Furnishings range from modular displays with backlit tops and a variety of display tables, to a variety of seating, including products created by the brand itself. At the far end, a hut with a thatched roof can be found which can be used as a mini meeting room. With sustainability in mind, the design has reused as much of the existing interior as possible while also opting for low-impact new additions—mono materials that are easier to recycle in the future, abundant natural materials like bamboo, and economical lighting. Mind you, the retail space also comes with a full-fledged repair station to promote a culture of conscious ownership. The new POLSPOTTEN store stocks the brand’s full range of home decor, furniture, lamp, tableware and textile collections.
