Following the opening in 2017 of a concept store in Milan‘s Porta Vittoria neighbourhood, quirky luxury show brand Marsèll makes an even bigger retail statement with a new flagship store in the prestigious Duomo district. Situated on Via della Spiga, one of the city’s main shopping arteries, the retail space measures no less than 400 sqm. (4,306 sq.ft.) set across the ground floor and basement of a modern residential building. The Italian brand tapped designers Mirko Ihrig and Casey Lewis of Lotto, a multidisciplinary design practice based in both Milan and Berlin, to co-create a fitting backdrop for its collections that takes cues from the rigorous architecture of Marcel Breuer and the meditative atmospheres created by Carlo Scarpa. Large floor-to-ceiling windows flood the lofty ground floor with natural light. A carefully selected palette of materials and finishes, and also their effortless juxtaposition, not only infuses the flagship store with understated elegance, but also signals its various sections.

The various furnishings seemingly emerge as autonomous volumes yet also offer an intriguing visual interplay, shaping the spatial experience of shoppers along the way. The men’s and women’s collections are found at street level, but situated right behind it, is a gallery area where a rotation of collaborations and site-specific art projects are presented. Downstairs in the basement section, a versatile space displays the Marsèll Gomme collection, but can just as easily host a variety of events on a whim’s notice. The understated room, defined by a central corridor flanked by two terraced slopes, can accessed via a large staircase characterised by a walnut bookcase conceived as a permanent work of art which extends to the full height of the space and forms a connecting element between the floors. Needless to say, the new Marsèll flagship store stocks the brand’s full range of men’s and women’s shoes, bags and small leather goods.
