Founded in 2000 by Tal Bodenstein, a hospitality entrepreneur and coffee enthusiast, Coffee Organization is part of a chain of coffee parlours in Tel Aviv serving organic fair-trade coffee from far-flung places. The company’s newest outpost, nestled in the downtown Lev Hair neighbourhood, adds to its appealing buzz with a understated concept all its own. Occupying a 40 sqm. (431 sq.ft.) unit on the ground floor of a low-rise residential building, the so-called Coffee Organization Studio features an interior design by Studio SB, but the Tel Aviv-based architecture and design practice pulled many more strings, overseeing every facet of the café’s creation and establishment. This includes formulating the business idea and concept, architectural planning, spatial experience crafting, graphic design management, product photography and website establishment, in addition to spatial photography and documentation.
Mind you, even the staff’s apparel and background muzak has been supervised. Interestingly, budgetary constraints shaped the actual design, leading to the deployment of basic materials, such as exposed plaster, construction gravel, and an elongated concrete cast table which more or less dominates the setting. The pure and unpolished design aims to emulate the natural state of green coffee beans, and as such, providing a unique aesthetic while also ensuring future adaptability. The table, embedded in gravel, is paired with a suspended linear light fixture, a robust shelving unit laden with merchandise, and last but not least, stools crafted from technical construction materials, such as birch wood and Polaritan foam which signals the practice’s focus on functionality, innovation, and rawness. The menu of the newly opened Coffee Organization Studio lists a variety of coffee concoctions, created from beans roasted and blended in-house, in addition to a range of utensils.
