Founded in 2014 by Jeremy Bresnen and Mike Giles, Montreal-based running gear and accessories brand Ciele Athletics, or Ciele Athlétique in French, has garnered a sizeable following. And now, the company is taking its operations to a higher level by opening a flagship store, its very first, on home turf. The store, situated on the ground floor of a 19th-century red brick building in the vibrant Griffintown neighbourhood, measures approx. 2,000 sq.ft. (186 sqm.) and forms part of Ciele Athletics‘s head office which is also housed here. Mind you, the company occupies a total of 10,000 sq.ft. (929 sqm.). The interior design, created by local architecture and design practice MRDK, is modern and clean, but allows peaks of the building’s original brickwork. Upon entering the premises, shoppers find themselves in a lofty corridor with an exposed ceiling, mosaic tile flooring, and lush plants and mannequins in two recessed wall sections.
A deep green wall with cut-outs demarcates the retail space where the setting is a tad more homey thanks to the herringbone parquet flooring. Large floor-to-ceiling windows allow the space to be filled with daylight, making not only the white furnishings and fixtures pop, but also drawing attention to the whitewashed exposed ceiling with its myriad of utility pipes. The merchandise is presented on recessed shelving units and a large display with embedded seating and subtly latticed sides which make it tie in with the sales counter opposite with a similar aesthetic. The Ciele Athletics flagship store carries the full range of men’s and women’s apparel, including the first edition of the Performance Run collection of essentials for all forms of running, in addition to accessories, footwear and headwear. Needless to say, being so connected to the city’s running community, the retail space also serves as a meeting place for the local running community and will host a programme of engaging in-store events.
