Since its inception fifteen years ago in St. Petersburg by landscape architects Yuriy Fomenko and Dmitriy Golubev, their design practice MOX (pron.: mokh, meaning ‘moss’) has gained a solid reputation with a over 200 compelling designs for both the public sector and private individuals which have been featured in leading publications at home and abroad. As of late, the practice has expanded to Moscow where it has nestled in the city’s Yakimanka district, combining sleek office space with additional facilities. Designed by architects Stanislav Kozeen and Marcelo Rueda of local architecture practice KOZEEN + RUEDA, the new MOX outpost is a hybrid affair, occupying approx. 100 sqm. (1,076 sq.ft.), and spread across a work space, meeting room, showroom, and shop on the ground floor of a large early 20th century residential building. The Yakimanka neighbourhood is dotted with a slew of landmark buildings, and the world-renowned Tretyakov Gallery is situated only two blocks away.

The all-soft grey MOX space s ees different rooms, and although there’s an open-plan configuration which optically enlarges the entire setting, they’re divided by glass or textile partitions. The lay-out is organised around axes running from the façade into the back of the interior, accentuated by the position of the ceiling lights. Although monochromatic, the premises show a wealth of details in form and textures, and each room comes with unique objects. Special attention has been given to lighting—the direction of the light fixtures can be changed depending on the position of the objects, while the abundance of ceiling lights allow for flexible arrangement of the artwork. The shop stocks a variety of curated items for both home and garden, and also books on landscape design and the world of plants. Additionally, the venue will host events, such as workshops and lectures, all related to MOX‘s expertise and other creative disciplines.
