Now that the global pandemic is over, the expansion of Phipps Plaza, the leading shopping centre of Atlanta‘s leafy Buckhead district, if not the entire city, resumed at an accelerated pace. This has not only resulted in an additional mixed-use building with a five-star hotel, but also ample room for more upscale retail. Alexander McQueen is one of ten luxury brands which has set up shop here, occupying a lofty 401 sqm. (4,316 sq.ft.) unit on the ground floor. Encased in floor-to-ceiling glass, the retail space has been designed by the brand’s London-based interior design team and features the retail design codes as laid down by creative director Sarah Burton in collaboration with acclaimed Chilean architect Smiljan Radić. Taking ample cues from the abundant spectrum of nature’s colours and materials, which underpins the core values of the house, the main material employed is wood.

Warm oak and walnut, in both light and dark variants, is captured by playfully patterned flooring, wall sections, in addition to a variety of shelving, display units and cabinets, and all intricately engineered with barely visible seams, oozing Alexander McQueen‘s brand values. Needless to say, specific elements of the interior design signal the house’s sense of impeccable craftsmanship, its forward creative vision, and the inimitable tension between the raw and the refined. These highlights include the use of cotton-crete, a cotton-based papier mâché cladding and cylindrical fitting rooms reflecting light and which are lined with fabric designed in the ateliers in London. The new Alexander McQueen store carries the full range of women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, accessories, shoes, bags and eyewear.
