Two years after GINETICS first popped up in Shanghai‘s hospitality scene, a new second outpost has opened its doors in Jing’an, a popular shopping and entertainment area. Giving new meaning to the definition ‘watering hole’, the bar occupies a compact 40 sqm. (431 sq.ft.) unit on the ground floor of a former residential building on tree-lined Nanchang Lu. Once again designed by Chinese design practice Studio Yuda, the chosen design codes a world away from the previous establishment and includes elements inspired by the Mid-Century Modern elements aesthetic. The backdrop pairs an abundance of timber with smoothly stuccoed walls and exposed concrete sections.

A striking T-shaped glass entrance is flanked by small windows on either side, allowing in some daylight. Upon entering, patrons immediately find themselves in the first seating area, furnished with benches, tables, chairs, and last but not least, an ornate glass chandelier. The semi-enclosed, elevated seating area in the back comes with an elongated bar with terrazzo top and chairs, in addition to a bench lining the opposite wall and more tables. As its name already implies, GINETICS is watering hole extraordinaire, serving exclusively a tightly curated range of gin brands from across the planet, all paired with pop-up events and DJ sets to keep things cool.
