Following a buoyant coffee culture, South Korea is one of the countries in the Far East where dessert culture has become just as popular. And we’re not talking just the capital city and lifestyle hub Seoul, but nationwide. Indicative of this trend is a sted, a newly opened dessert café in Daegu, the country’s third biggest city and a three-and-a-half hour car drive southeast of Seoul. The establishment occupies 306 sqm. (3,294 sq.ft.) spread across two floors of a modern low-rise structure in the downtown area of Yangnyeongsi. The interior design, created by Busan-based architecture, design and branding practice design by 83, takes ample cues from classic European architecture and interior design, albeit infused with contemporary chic to further elevate the experience of indulgence and relaxation.

The ground floor sees exposed concrete walls, existing columns decorated with faux echinuses, and inserted arches as a backdrop for a sturdy, seemingly old, bar of carved dark timber. A barrisol stretch ceiling over the bar adds a distinctly modern touch to the setting. One floor up, the setting is somewhat different. With rows of windows on three sides, it’s light and airy, featuring a faux bar in the middle of the room, paired with an ample number of different chairs and stools, while various seating arrangements, line the walls. The furnishings, all sourced from a vintage shop in the Itaewon neighbourhood of Seoul, further accentuate sted‘s Euro-chic style. As said, sted is a dessert café, such as cakes and madeleines, or dulce de leche and banana slices, but it’s paired with almost as many coffee concoctions.
