The agnès b. Galerie Boutique opened its doors on the premises of the agnès b. store in Tokyo‘s Aoyama shopping district five years ago, and it’s only one of three of such branded exhibition venues outside the company’s homebase in Paris. These gallery spaces signal the brand’s affiliation with the arts forged by founder Agnès B. since its inception, and accordingly, the venue in the Japanese capital has been featuring a rotation of interesting shows. The next show, entitled EDGE, will open on Fri – Oct 28 (6pm-8pm / DJ set by molphobia with a sound collage centered on sampling and synthesizer input beat maker), and exclusively dedicated to the work of Japanese digital artist Kenta Cobayashi. The artist started out taking photos when in art school, distributing his work through various zines, blogs and social media, but also by way of shows, events and collaborations.

During the past few years, Cobayashi started to tweak existing photographic works and specific images as sources. Cleverly adapting to new developments, the artist uses new media such as NFT, AR, video, and 3D to create digital images and distribute his works. On display at this solo exhibition is Cobayashi’s life-size zine MMGGZZNN from 2014 and 2015, a new 3D computer graphics work that can be described as a mixture or collage of past works, and an archive of performances and collaborations. And that’s not all, folks. Prior to the exhibition, two of the artist’s works, Sleeping Nishi #smudge and Amusing #liquify, are displayed on the ground floor of the agnès b. store, while the façade is adorned by a special design. In conjunction with the exhibition, agnès b. will release a limited edition of 400 postcard sets, and Cobayashi plans to publish both the latest edition of his photo book Everything, The Past Exists, and his monochrome zine Untitled Sky.
